Only two horses are generally used in the plough in the Highlands but as three are sometimes employed for subsoiling &c, it has been thought advisable to give an illustration of a swingletree for 3 horses, so that that the name of any part may be found if required. When swingletree for 2 horses is used, “the middle swingle-tree” (No. 4) is wanting and the compensating lever apparatus (Nos. 7, 8 and 9) is dispensed with. In such cases the other parts retain the names given above.
