droch

a Bad, evil, wicked. 2 Mischievous. 2 Sad, calamitous. [Always placed before its noun. Numbers of words with droch prefixed are inserted in other Gaelic dictionaries and for that reason are reprinted here. These words might certainly be omitted, excepting a few, like droch-bheart and droch-ghean in which the accent has transferred itself to droch]. Droch bhean, a bad woman; droch fhear, a bad man; droch rùn, a wicked intention; droch-bheart, mischief; droch latha, a bad day; chan eil an droch fheum aige air, he is sorely in need of it; droch fheum, no need; chan eil an droch fheum, there is not no need = there is great need. Compounds formed with droch whose second element begins with c should always have the c aspirated, as, droch-chleachdadh, not droch-cleachdadh, as in McL&D.
