§ sm Mary's thistle — (carduus marianus). The leaves of this plant are blotched as if with milk being spilt on them, the superstition being that they are spotted with the Virgin Mary's milk — hence its other names, fòthannan-Muire and fòthannan-breac. Its name of beàrnan-breac is from the peculiar notched shape of the edges of the leaves.
