creiseim

s These two pegs on the upper crossbar, as in the second illustration No. 236a and two similar ones on the lower crossbar, explain the old form of dealbh (warping-frame) formerly in use in Lewis, but the form shown in the first illustration is that generally used elsewhere. The form of winding thread on two top and bottom pegs in the lower illustration (236a) is called ‘creiseim' in Lewis. This is the modern method. In the upper creiseim twelve threads are tied together and placed over the end peg as indicated, so that there are 6 threads above and 6 below. They are then crossed between the pegs so that the 6 threads that are below the first peg are on the upper side of the centre peg, and again they are brought below the third peg as indicated thus. After rounding the third peg the twelve threads come together and are carried round the pegs in the side of the frame as indicated in the sketch. They then round the lower creiseim together, and are brought back round the side pegs to the top following in the same order as before until they come to the upper creiseim.
