Historically, a grass-keeper is the older term and refers to someone paid specifically to keep animals from straying off the rough summer grazing onto the common grazing in towns. This would be this person's only job for this period and they would receive compensation in money, cattle or housing. See Statistical Account of Scotland Volume XIV p. 197.
