Historically, tìr was a neuter noun and was assigned gender differently according to region when the neuter case died. In many cases, this resulted in tìr being treated as masculine in the nominative c.f. tìr-mór but feminine in the genitive c.f. cruth na tìre. Today, it is mainly treated as a feminine noun throughout in Scottish Gaelic.
