Macintosh says that MacGillony was a famous hunter in the Grampians and several vestiges of his temporary huts were still to be seen in 1785 in the mountains of Atholl. His “dun cow” was the wild mountain doe. Macintosh gives staghail (an unknown word) for stòthaidh, which makes the proverb meaningless. Sguaban-stòthaidh means the cutting of corn short, as would be done for a hasty supply. The MacGillonies belonged to the Clan Cameron but were originally allied to the MacLeans — NGP.
