-ain, -an, sm Rake 2 Instrument for breaking clods and used as a harrow. In the W. Isles it consists of a block of wood with a few teeth and is used in such places as will not admit of the use of a harrow. It is commonly tied to the horse's tail but not unfrequently it is dragged along the surface by women and boys. In W. Ross-shire it is applied to a short heavy rake with a head over 2 in. in thickness and a handle under 4 ft. in length. With it the seed is covered, clods are broken and potato ground, before the tops come through, is raked or harrowed to keep down weeds — CR. 3 Noise, croaking noise. 4 Crash. 5 Bandy or crooked stick. 6 Mischief, evil, wickedness. 7 Bowling. 8 Riot, noise. 9 Provincial denomination of arable land (ceann-ràcain).
