falraig

sf An fhalraig is the transverse beam or beams to which the double or single stakes are fixed, for tying cattle, in the older constructed byres. This term was obtained from an old and highly intelligent farmer who was a schoolmaster in his younger days and whose native place was near the east end of Loch Tay. In the narrow thatched buildings, the space between the rafters or cabair and the top of the wall, was often made up with divots. So possibly the term arose from the beam extending from wall to wall, across the building.
